Free Adult Literacy Resources at Library

What is basic adult literacy, and why is it important? Literacy is the ability to read, write, speak,
and listen in a way that lets us communicate effectively. It allows us to make sense of the world
through various written, visual, and spoken texts.
Literacy gives access to information and significantly reduces gender, race, nationality, and
religious inequality that favors one group over another, whether dealing with access to education,
property, employment, health care, or civic participation.

This past year, the Louisville Rotary Club provided a generous donation to the Winston County
Library with an intended use toward literacy. With their contribution, the library purchased
literacy materials for public use. “We are grateful to be able to offer these resources to the
public,” said librarian Beth Edwards. “Rotary’s mission is literacy, and we are proud to partner
with them in helping to promote this for Winston County citizens.”
Do you need help with reading or writing, or do you know someone who does? You are
encouraged to take advantage of these free resources. Reading hardships are often a hidden
struggle. If someone confides in you about their struggles or desire to improve reading skills,
take the time to listen and support them.
Please share information about the literacy-based resources available at the Winston County
Library and let them know they are not alone. This past year, a man in his 70s who could not
read is now reading at a fourth-grade level, thanks to this program at your local library.
Also, you can become a volunteer. You can support this program by offering your time, skills,
and expertise with as little as one to two hours a week. We would love to have you join us!
Please share this information with your family, social group, church, fellow employees, and
anyone else who can benefit from this service! Remember that literacy is one of the greatest
gifts, and the Winston County Library has the tools to help.
For more information, please visit or contact the Winston County Library at 662-773-3212.

Library customers can visit the iOS or Google Play app stores, search for “Mid-Mississippi Library System” to download the free app and connect with their local MMRLS library in new ways.

Once downloaded, library guests can search and request items directly from their smartphone or tablet, access a digital version of their library card, explore digital library content, and receive notifications for upcoming library events. Additionally, patrons can manage their library account info, check due dates, and renew their items.

“We continue to seek ways to connect with our guests and make the library more accessible to everybody. Our new app offers a modernized way for our patrons to use the library from their mobile devices at their convenience while on the go or from the comfort of their homes,” said Josh Haidet, Executive Director.

Mid-MS Regional Library System Goes Mobile

The Mid-Mississippi Regional Library System (MMRLS) has received over $41,000.00 in grant funding from the Institute of Museum and Library Services and the Mississippi Library Commission to provide mobile library services to Attala, Holmes, Leake, Montgomery, and Winston Counties. A new eighteen-foot-long customized mobile library vehicle will deliver materials, technology, and programming to communities and institutions with limited access to library resources, or to those who may want more convenience in receiving library services.

The mobile library will house hundreds of items available for checkout, including books and DVDs for all ages. Mobile library staff members will be able to provide programming, reference services, and even sign patrons up for a library card. The library system plans to offer additional services on the vehicle in the future, such as WIFI, wireless printing, and more.

MMRLS is seeking to partner with institutions throughout its service area to provide mobile library services by scheduling regular visits to local long-term care and senior living facilities, schools, daycares, and other community organizations. The library also plans to visit local festivals and other events. Those interested in scheduling a visit can contact their local branch library location or visit: midmisslib.com/mobilelibrary.

“Our new mobile library will offer our patrons almost anything they could get from a physical library building,” said Josh Haidet, MMRLS Executive Director. “Our thirteen branch locations do a wonderful job serving our communities. We are excited to now have the ability to bring our services beyond the walls of our physical buildings to any location throughout our five-county service area.”

For more information about all library services, call or visit your local MMRLS branch library or the library’s website at: midmisslib.com. All library services are made possible thanks to the continued financial support of our local elected officials.

Under her six-year tenure, despite the pandemic, a lot was accomplished. Through annual membership drives and book sales, the Friends were able to purchase rocker chairs for the Teen Room, surveillance cameras for inside and outside the library, books for the library, hosted several City and County officials thank-you lunches, hosted brown-bag lunches for author events, hosted a Holiday Drawing event of over $1500 worth of merchandise from local businesses, new plants for the lobby, signage boards and even a cleaning unit for the HVAC unit. Effective April 1, 2022 Cindy Ward and Marion Jones took over as the new co-presidents of the Friends group.

Ward, a Louisville native with over 30 years of experience in education, recently retired from Mississippi State University as Director of PREP (Program of Research and Evaluation for Public Schools). She has also worked with three national assessment companies, ETS of Princeton, NJ, Harcourt Assessment and CTB-McGraw-Hill Testing and was Director of Student Assessment for the Mississippi Department of Education. She was also and Associate Professor of Educational Leadership and Research at the University of Southern Mississippi.

Jones, a Delta native (NittaYuma) who now resides in Louisville, is currently the Mathematics Specialist and District Test Coordinator for the Corinth, MS School District. She has also served as Director of Student Assessment at the Mississippi Department of Education, and Director of Mathematics at Harcourt Assessment and Director of the Statewide Migrant Service Center for PREP.

“We were so sad to lose Theresa as head of our Friends group,” said librarian Beth Edwards. “She has been wonderful to work with and so supportive of the library. We will certainly miss her.” Of the new co-presidents, Edwards said “Cindy and Marion are so excited and are already working on fun ideas for fundraising. Cozy Up to a Good Mystery with the Winston County Library

Do you love reading cozy mysteries? Then come to the library and join the Kensington Cozy Card program, where your love of the cozy mystery genre results in prizes!

It’s free to participate! All you have to do is:
1. Ask library staff for a punch card.
2. Each time you check out a cozy mystery (book, eBook, or audiobook), make sure to have the staff member stamp one of the ten purple circles on the punch card.
3. When you have ten stamps, mail in your Cozy Card with your name and address. You will be provided the address to mail your punch card.

Once your Cozy Card is received, you will receive a cozy mystery or advance copy of a cozy mystery for every completed Cozy Card received, along with a new Cozy Card for you to start again!

What is a cozy mystery? Cozy mysteries are comedic murder mysteries that show you what happens when you put a baker, a quilter, a candy shop owner, a pet sitter, or some other unqualified sleuth on the case to solve a crime. More precisely, cozies are lighthearted, with plenty of humor, no graphic violence or adult situations, and include an amateur sleuth (or sleuthing team) living in a close-knit community, solving a crime while juggling a day job, hobby, or other responsibilities.

Sound like fun? Be sure to stop by the library, get your first Cozy Mystery Punch Card, and start reading!

The Winston County Library is promoting “Beyond Books” month during January. “We have over 65,800 books in our collection”, says Librarian Beth Edwards. “But, these days, a library is so much more than a book collection. We offer many other services to our patrons that have become very popular!”

Our additional services include free apps such as Hoopla and cloudLibrary, which offer e-books, audiobooks, TV shows, movies, comics, and music; wireless printing and free scanning/e-mailing. There are also over 2,000 free DVDs available for checkout and audio CDs.

For children, there are digital learning devices such as educational tablets called Launchpads and Wonderbooks, which are print books with pre-loaded audio content bound into the cover so children can hear their favorite stories while reading along!

Other services have been around for a long time and are always popular – newspapers, magazines, fax, laminating, and copy services.

A new service is now being offered to the public for free – Notary Services. “We are very excited to have this available to the public,” commented Librarian Beth Edwards. “We continue to strive to find new ways to serve our community.”

The Winston County Library is a part of the Mid-Mississippi Regional Library System, headquartered in Kosciusko, MS.
