“We know our patrons depend on faster, more reliable internet now more than ever with virtual school and remote work becoming more common, and we are glad to make this improvement,” said Michael Davide, IT Coordinator.

MMRLS continues to grow and expand its offerings to the public. Whether it is faster internet, free online tutoring through Brainfuse HelpNow, or job search assistance with Brainfuse JobNow, we are here to meet our community’s needs.

For more information, call or visit your local branch library, or the library’s website at www.midmisslib.com. All library services are made possible thanks to the continued financial support of our local elected officials.

The library is also available 24/7 online at midmisslib.com where patrons can download free e-books, audiobooks, stream movies or TV shows, get free online tutoring via Brainfuse HelpNow, or use one of our many databases.

Winston County Friends of the Library Organization Receives Margaret Murray Grant

The Winston County Friends of the Library organization was recently named the recipient of the 2021 Margaret Murray Grant. Sponsored by the local Friends of the Libraries chapters, the Margaret Murray Grant advances Mississippi public library literacy efforts through programming, collection development, and activities. The Friends of the Library group will use the $500 grant to enhance and expand the Winston County Library children’s book collection by purchasing new interactive books known as Wonderbooks.

Wonderbooks are printed books with a ready-to-play audiobook inside. Kids can press play to have their favorite book read to them while they follow along, developing their reading and comprehension skills alongside a parent, grandparent, sibling, or on their own. These books also feature “learning mode,” a fun and educational question and answer session about the book.

“Wonderbooks inspire kids to read and teach parents how to dialogue with their child about the book,” said Theresa Bridges, President of the Winston County Friends of the Library. “Research shows that hearing and seeing words at the same time can improve reading success. Statistics show that being read to 3 times a week increases test scores to the top 25%.”

To learn more about Wonderbooks or about becoming a member of the Winston County Friends of the Library organization, please visit or call (662-773-3212) the Winston County Library.

Mid-MS Regional Library System Announces, “The End of Late Fees” and “The Return of Browsing” to Celebrate National Library Week

National Library Week (April 4-10, 2021) is a time to highlight the essential role libraries, librarians and library supporters play in transforming lives and strengthening communities. The theme for this year’s National Library Week is “Welcome to Your Library,” and the Mid-Mississippi Regional Library System (MMRLS) is announcing two important initiatives to celebrate this event.

First, to make the library more accessible and inviting for all, the library is announcing the elimination of all overdue or “late” fees for library materials owned by MMRLS. Any guest who currently owes a late fee on any MMRLS item will have that fee waived. Going forward, any guest with an overdue MMRLS owned item will not be charged a late fee.

“Our goal at MMRLS is to make everyone feel welcome to visit and use the services of their local library,” said MMRLS Executive Director Josh Haidet. “While customers will need to bring overdue items back before checking out more items or using other library services, as well as to continue to pay for lost or damaged items, we hope this change will encourage more people to check out more items without having to worry about facing a financial penalty. Our Administrative Board and I recognize that the hectic lives of our patrons sometimes make it difficult to avoid late fees, which often served to discourage use of our library system. Obviously, that is the last thing we want to happen,” Haidet said.

Second, the library system is welcoming patrons back into the book and DVD shelves, as full browsing will again be available at all locations. “In order to combat the spread of COVID-19, the library system had to make some difficult choices over the past year,” said Haidet. “Our patrons have been extremely patient with us, and while we’ve been offering limited browsing collections plus curbside service for quite some time now, we’ve also heard from many patrons asking when they’d be able to browse our bookshelves again. We’re so happy to again be able to give everyone the freedom to view the entirety of our vast collections and choose what materials they need or want for themselves.”

For more information about National Library Week, including virtual library programming, follow MMRLS on social media @midmisslib, call or visit your local branch library, or the library’s website at www.midmisslib.com. All library services are made possible thanks to the continued financial support of our local elected officials.

Welcome to Your Mississippi Library (National Library Week 4-10)

April 4-10th, 2021 is National Library Week and the Winston County Library will be celebrating a little differently this year.  While there will be no large gatherings in our meeting room for author events or luncheons honoring our City and County leaders for their continued support for the library, we will be hosting a few events that everyone can enjoy.

Beginning Monday, April 5th, you can go on our faceBook page and guess the number of candy pieces in the jar on our circulation counter.  Once you see the jar of candy online, then call 662-773-3212 and tell us your guess.  Or you can come in the library and see it for yourself!  The winner gets the jar of candy!

On Tuesday, April 6th, our children’s librarian Andrea McHenry will do a special virtual storytime on our faceBook page, so be sure and watch for this!

On Thursday, April 8th, we will host a mobile blood drive from 11-2pm in front of the library.  Please call 662-773-3212 to make an appointment.

And on Friday, April 9th, there will be a plant swap from 9-1 in front of the library.   Thanks to our local garden clubs for participating in this fun event.  Just in time for your spring garden planting!

We are so blessed to have this wonderful building here in Louisville.  I’ve been to many libraries in Mississippi, and The Winston County Library is one of the most beautiful ones there is – inside and out.  People visiting from out of town marvel at how warm and inviting  it is.  But more important than having an impressive piece of architecture, the staff and patrons and local officials who support the library services are priceless to this community.  We offer so many free services to everyone that cannot be found anywhere else.

We truly do want to Welcome You To Your Mississippi Library!

Genealogy/Local History Month at Winston County Library

February is Genealogy/Local History Month at the Winston County Library. Each week we will highlight something of interest from our collection to the public. This week we are announcing the acquisition of Rotary Club Newsletters from 1944 in Louisville, MS. Five Rotary Newsletters are included and were mailed to Louisville native Bernard T. Hickman, Sgt. 1st class while stationed at the Naval Hospital Corps School in Bainbridge, MD. These newsletters were mailed to men and women from Winston County serving in the military all over the world.

Louisville Rotary Club officers in 1944 – Walter Bennett, President; Walter Darby, Secretary/Treasurer; Bill Day, Claude Fair Program Chairmen; Bill Bennett, C. P. Thrailkill and Charlie Irwin, co-editors of the newsletter.

Winston County locations mentioned are The Community Center (now the Chamber of Commerce/Economic Development), The Teen Tavern, Blackwood’s Barber Shop, Old Parks Hotel and Doyle Lake.

“The newsletters are quite humorous and speak of so many old family names in Winston County.” said librarian Beth Edwards. “Bass fishing on Doyle Lake; dances at the Community Center; interesting programs at Rotary meetings such as Mr. Charles Fair working for the F.B.I in Cleveland, New York and Detroit; farming conditions in Winston County and so much more.”

Photocopies of the letters are available for the public to read.

Blood Drive At Library

There will be a Vitalant community blood drive at the Winston County Library on Friday  February 19th from 11a.m. – 2 p.m. Face coverings are required for donors and staff. You must  call the library for your donor appointment 662-773-3212.

On the day of the blood drive, go to vitalant.org/health to fill our your confidential health  questionnaire. Once you’ve filled in your information, review your responses and then click “finish” to generate your Fast Track Ticket. Print and bring your Fast Track Ticket with you. If  you’re using a smart phone or tablet, zoom in on the bar code and take a screenshot, or save  your ticket as a PDF.

Vitalant is testing blood donations for COVID-19 antibodies to find potential convalescent  plasma donors. “Blood donations are down significantly across Mississippi, so it is vital that  blood drives, such as this one, be successful,” said librarian Beth Edwards. “Please consider  giving on February 19th.”
